Unexpected Spaces

International artist Marta Chilindron, raised in Montevideo, Uruguay, is celebrated for her innovative use of geometry and color to reshape visual and spatial perception. Over a career spanning several decades, she has developed a diverse body of work, including paintings, prints, public installations, and her signature collapsible sculptures.

Her site-specific installation Unexpected Spaces at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) welcomes travelers with three monumental glass forms in yellow, green, and blue, symbolizing sunlight, foliage, and water elements that reflect Houston’s natural beauty. Suspended above the vestibules leading to the International Departures Lobby, these translucent structures transform light and space into a dialogue between the building’s façade and interior. The result is a vibrant, contemplative environment that captures the rhythm of international travel and offers passengers a moment of harmony and connection within the flow of their journeys.
