Underpassage

Underpassage by Moon Papas is a new light and sound installation transforming the Texas Avenue and Rusk Street underpasses into a welcoming and visually engaging gateway for pedestrians moving through downtown. The project creates a vibrant experience using color shifting light that moves through eight hues and an interactive sound component activated by touch, bringing new energy and visibility to one of the area’s busiest corridors.

The installation was developed through Downtown Houston’s ongoing work to improve comfort and connectivity for people navigating the city on foot. A 2023 pedestrian lighting study identified these underpasses as high traffic areas in need of better illumination and way finding. By enhancing walkability near destinations like Daikin Park and strengthening the links between neighborhoods, Underpassage supports the city’s broader commitment to safer and engaging public spaces. Installation occurred overnight to minimize traffic impacts and ensure a smooth transition into daily use.
