Vargas-Suarez Universal, born in Mexico City and raised in Houston’s Clear Lake City, celebrates the intersection of art, technology, and aviation in Horizons Spectrum, a large-scale installation at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Deeply connected to Houston’s aerospace legacy, the artist transforms data visualization into a vivid narrative about the complexities of global air travel.
The work features an armature supporting 59 modular painted aluminum panels, punctuated by five sculptural airplanes. Integrated within the design is the IAH barcode found on luggage tags and boarding passes, symbolizing the intricate systems that keep travel in motion. Through vibrant color, geometric precision, and layered form, Horizons Spectrum captures the rhythm and efficiency of flight while reflecting Houston’s role as a global hub. Blending technological motifs with artistic vision, Vargas-Suarez Universal offers a dynamic meditation on connectivity, innovation, and the shared experience of movement across the skies.
