Harmonies was a citywide interactive art and music experience presented by the Houston Theater District, Houston First, and Downtown Houston+, on view throughout 2023 and 2024. Installed throughout downtown Houston and the Theater District, the series featured ten larger-than-life music boxes that filled public spaces with sound, light, and play.
Launched in late 2023 with holiday-themed music, Harmonies evolved to showcase performances from Theater District organizations such as Ars Lyrica and Performing Arts Houston, as well as local artists including Vivalda Ndula and J. E. Hernandez from Performing Arts Houston’s New/Now Commissioning Project.
Designed by LeMonde Studio with eco-conscious principles, the sculptures operated entirely without electricity and were activated by human touch. Turning a crank set each piece in motion, creating captivating soundscapes and glowing displays of light. The collection featured imaginative forms such as a towering Nutcracker, a guitar slide, a massive boombox, and an elegant harp, each paired with its own soundtrack of classics and audience favorites from The Lion King and Cowboy Bob to The Nutcracker and The Daughter of the Regiment.
The project concluded in 2024, leaving a lasting legacy of creativity, community, and shared joy in the heart of downtown Houston.
